20W vs 40W Laser Engraver: When More Power Actually Helps

A 40W laser module is not automatically “twice as good” as a 20W system. Higher optical power can improve cutting capability and throughput in appropriate materials, but source type, spot characteristics, motion system and workflow still matter.

Where 40W can matter

If your work is dominated by cutting thicker compatible material, additional diode power can be valuable. xTool's current S1 line, for example, offers both 20W and 40W modules while keeping a large enclosed work area.

Where 20W can be enough

For engraving-focused workflows, the constraint may be setup, resolution, rotary handling or the laser wavelength rather than raw cutting power. A 20W fiber source also solves a very different problem from a 20W blue diode source.

Compare systems, not labels

Use power only after you have matched source type and work area to the job. Then compare enclosure, software, accessories and total cost.
